| 1A) EMBELLISHED TULIPS |
|
This contemporary Shadow Appliqué technique is a great project for anyone who loves the look of appliqué but doesn't want to take the time to stitch the edges under.
Once the shapes are cut out they are placed on the background fabric, covered with tulle and then layered on batting and backing. Hand quilting, embroidery stitches and beading are then used to finish the piece.

| 2A) 3-DIMENSIONAL APPLIQUE QUILTED PILLOW PANEL |
|
This workshop is for quilters who have basic appliqué skills and would like to try out several more advanced techniques while creating a three dimensional design.
Students will learn how to make 3D balloon flowers, stitch narrow bias stems, use overlays for positioning, and needleturn techniques in this workshop.
The finished block can be made into a pillow panel (which would tie onto a prepared pillow base as in image) or finished as you wish. Several ideas will be discussed in class such as using it as a pillow front, or adding a border and completing it as a wallhanging.

| 3A) SHADOW APPLIQUE |
In this workshop students will experiment with a variety of shadow effects using some of the following fabrics: cheesecloth, tulle, polyester satin, organza and cotton.
Students will design their piece based on either a paper cut design or an inspiration that she’ll/he’ll bring to Workshop. I will also bring design possibilities with me.
The first day will be spent creating a variety of dyed/painted fabrics using disperse dyes and fabric paints. While these are drying students will begin working on their design. On the second day students will construct their shadow applique pieces. The project will be kept to a maximum size of 14”.
Once the projects are layered several stitch possibilities will be
demonstrated. These will include seed and kantha stitching. Students will then choose which techniques she/he will use in her/his piece.
I supply a kit that will include the paint, above mentioned fabric, batting and thread necessary to finish the piece.

| 4A) POINSETTIA SHADOW QUILTING |
 |
In this workshop students will create a piece that can be used as a table center. wallhanging or pillow top.
This technique produces lovely results in a relatively short length of time. The design will be placed on a cotton base then held in place using a organza overlay. This will then be layered, hand quilted and embellished with embroidery stitches. There is no need to turn under the edges of the motifs as they will be protected by the overlay. |

| 5A) CRAZY QUILT |
 |
When Maureen was researching the History of Quilting in Canada for her Diploma in P&Q, she had the rare pleasure of studying several crazy quilts that were tucked safely away in museum archives. This inspired her to revist this age old technique. In these sessions Maureen will share with her students many different techniques, including embroidery stitches from these antique quilts, beading, and silk ribbon embroidery to name a few. Students will work on a project of her/his choice. Project possibilities are as follows: lap quilt (or larger if desired), wallhanging, needlework roll, tea cozy, ornament, Christmas stocking etc…

| 7A) PANSY TABLE RUNNER |
|
This table runner is a great project for both the beginner and more advanced quilter. The workshop will begin with an overview of the latest applique equipment. Students will then begin their table runner while learning many applique techniques which will include the following:
- the invisible applique stitch
- stitching and then embellishing and beading the flowers before actually stitching them to a quilted base - “Slip/Off Block Applique”
- quick way of making stems
- needleturn applique

 |
This piece was inspired by a tapestry made for the Countess of Shrewsbury in the 16th Century.
Students will use Slip/Off Block Applique techniques, embroidery stitches and beading to prepare the motifs before applying them to the base.
This design can be used as a pillow sham as noted on the left, or as a pillow or a table runner if desired.

| 9A) BOUQUET OF FLOWERS |
|
Using various dimensional techniques the student will begin a “bouquet of flowers” wall hanging (or the center of a medallion quilt).
This is a great workshop to learn a variety of applique techniques such as a woven basket, Celtic stems, cut away stems, violets, ruching, yo yo flowers, folded buds, lilacs, daffodils, balloon flowers, gathered buds, bluebells, daisies, and bonded shaped applique, etc.
The students are encouraged to create a “one of a kind design” using the techniques learned rather than reproducing my “bouquet of flowers”.

Using either hand or machine “Mola” techniques, which involves both negative and positive applique, students will begin stitching one of the two original mola designs.
The machine technique is a “quilt as you go” project.
The finished piece can be a small wall hanging or incorporated into clothing, tote bags etc.

| 11A) WEEDS NOT INVITED |
 |
Using machine applique techniques inspired by Jane Sassaman (using fusible interfacing instead of fusible web), students will begin stitching their “flower garden”.
Students will be encouraged and assisted in making a “one of a kind piece” and may bring pictures or drawings of items they might like to have growing in their garden.
A large portion of the quilting takes place while machine appliqueing. Background quilting finishes the piece. This project is completely machine stitched and embellished.

“Template Free” Curved Piecing
Students will love the potential of curved piecing once they have learned just how easy it can be!! Using just a rotary cutter - NO rulers or templates - students will begin a “one of a kind” top using simple curved piecing techniques.
This is more of a techniques workshop with each student creating her own “masterpiece” rather than one identical to mine.
Suggestions will be made on how students might add another dimension to their tops using applique designs etc.

| 1B) MINI ART QUILT - EMBELLISHED FLOWERS |
 |
This is a great project for anyone wanting to experiment with a variety of art quilt techniques on a small scale.
Students will create a small wall quilt using the following techniques: free motion stitching, adding colour using Prisma Colour Pencils, embroidery stitches and beading. Several options for finishing these pieces will be shown.
Different design ideas will be presented in this workshop and students will have a chose of which one she works with.

| 2B) DESIGN TECHNIQUES FOR THE BEGINNER |
 |
This workshop is for the quilter that wants to begin designing his/her own quilts. The two - three day workshop is a process orientated workshop, rather than a product orientated one with students only working on paper. Students will begin with a colour study of a design source - eg. leaves - and then move through the steps necessary in creating a small design.
Students will be encouraged to create their own individual work.

| 3B) CREATING COLOUR & DESIGN WITH PAINTSTIKS |

|
While Paintstiks have been around for years I don’t believe they have received the attention they deserve. These oversized “crayons” are a combination of pigment, oil and wax and dry to a flexible film. They can be used on any porous surface.
In this workshop students will use both Professional and Iridescent colours while working several small projects. Various ways of adding exciting colour and design to either paper or fabric will be presented depending on the length of workshop.
Designs created using these Paintstiks can be quilted and embellished as desired, incorporated in quilted items such as clothing, or combined to create unique pieces of art.

| 4B) FABRIC PAINTING AND EMBELLISHMENT TECHNIQUES |
 |
Students would not make an actual project but instead would work samples of each technique for further reference.
To save individual students the expense of purchasing all of the supplies needed to do the above sampling I can provide many of them for a kit fee that would be payable at the time of the workshop. Students would be given a supply list for other items that she would need to bring.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me as noted above. If there is a technique that you are interested in that is not listed above, check with me to see if I might be able to present this for you.
